It was my turn to cook breakfast the next day, so I asked Fitzy to wake me up in time to prepare waffles. Now, to be fair, in hindsight, I blame myself for what happened. Asking a juvenile delinquent, even if said juvenile was the ship’s AI, to wake me up without specific instructions as to the manner of how the command was to be executed, was an invitation for trouble. Needless to say, I got up in time to make the waffles. My hope was Fitzy and her army of housekeeping bots would be able to dry out my room and, more specifically, my bed before I attempted to sleep in it again.

The waffles were an old family recipe. The key was to include a dash of cinnamon along with mashed potatoes in with the flour. The mashed potatoes allowed the waffles to become crispy on the outside while soft and delicate on the inside. It’s a well-established fact that the Riker clan takes their waffles, like their coffee, very seriously.

To illustrate my point, the cinnamon had to be derived from Cinnamomum verum bark… the only true cinnamon. None of that inferior cinnamon derived Cinnamomum cassia or even worse… that synthetic mass-market crap you find in the hyper-markets. Go real or go home!

Sadly, both the butter and syrup had to be synthetic. Maple trees didn’t grow well outside of Earth’s biome and that affected the flavor profile of the resulting syrup. As for the butter, it was just too expensive for a woman of my financial means. It’s not like cows were a dime a dozen after the Earth froze over.

At any rate, there had never been any complaints about my waffles… nor were there ever any leftovers. I took that as a good sign.
